Will There Be Any Regular U.S. Network Newscasts At 6:30 On Thursday?

I honestly can't remember the last time there was true Breaking News at 6:30 PM EDT. (As opposed to the fake "Breaking News" networks usually put up on their graphics, even when a story is 8 hours old.)

But on Thursday night, Joe Biden has scheduled a rare press conference after the NATO Summit at exactly the time all of the Big 3 have their regular newscasts. So do they take it live or do their headline thing and present clips later? My bet is there's no choice but they'll have to take it as it happens, given the questions over the President's cognition. And it's expected reporters are going to grill him hard, which will only add to the interest.

Either way, should be fun to see how all the networks handle it and whether they find time for any other stories in the half hour allowed (and if they run an extra half hour out of it, interrupting the lucrative programming of the local affiliates in the 7 PM hour.)

Either way, an unusual night for network news down south.

It will be interesting to see if the press conference actually starts on time.  Often they start late, and by more than just a few minutes.  If it starts close to on time, shows how serious the Democrats are taking this.

I'd assume the 6:30 time was very deliberately picked because of it being the national news time (on the east coast) and as such starting right on time is crucial.

6:38pm EDT and nothing yet.

On the Seattle stations, KOMO (ABC) has local news on right now, while the NBC and CBS affiliates have their regularly scheduled programming. KOMO said they’d break in when Biden is ready.

Well so much for that.

NBC NYC is running the regular national newscast.

It’s been rescheduled to 7:00, according to a Reddit post I saw

Man, the US networks have a lot of commercials during their 6:30 newscasts.

I should have known from bitter experience - press conferences never start on time. Why would this one be any different? It has to start soon. I think Biden said he has to be in bed by 8 PM!

I'll be watching to see if the local stations interrupt their regular (and often lucrative) local programming to carry the network feed.

Anyone think he might announce he is stepping down?

It's pretty much why I've had the TV on.

Unlikely, but possible.

I'm not sure if his staff knows how to tell time. An hour late is inexcusable, especially with every major TV network waiting.

Buffalo's Channels 2 and 7 both carried the speech live. Meanwhile, Channel 4, Buffalo's news ratings leader, stayed with its game shows of Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy.

For the record, the CBS network carried it as it was happening, but for whatever reason, WIVB chose to stay with regular programming.

In New York City, all three networks took it live, as did independent WWOR and the CW's WPIX. The only holdout? Not a surprise. Fox affiliate WNYW was showing a WNBA game instead.

I wondered if he would he would announce he's stepping aside in favour of George Clooney entering the race.

Interesting that the newser went well past 8PM, leaving WIVB no choice but to take it in progress, as they joined CBS primetime programming. Oops!

Not that I expected it or that they should have, but it's worth noting that no Toronto radio stations took this press conference, including CFRB, AM640 and 680 News Radio, despite its potential historic significance. IIRC, 'RB took the debate.

And here's the coda, proving that some Americans could care less who's president - they just want to watch their show. Why doesn't this surprise me?
