Shane Hewitt's New "Night Shift" Show Picks Up Where Corus Left Off

I remember a few nights when I couldn't sleep, tuning into Shane Hewitt's "The Shift" out of Corus Vancouver. It was on all the company's talk stations, including 640, and essentially filled a dead overnight period with live programming. It's where I first heard Hewitt and he was a welcome voice in the night.

The show did not go hot and heavy on politics or current affairs, per se, but took a far different, more populist attitude. It was only his first show,  so things could change, but it appears he's bringing back elements of that now cancelled all night program.

One of his topics on Monday was a continuing theme, "what law do you regularly admit to breaking?", a question he asked of both callers and guests. And among his first regulars was Andy Baryer, aka Handy Andy, an expert in all things electronics. He was frequently featured on the Corus show, as well.

All in all, I enjoyed what I heard of his initial outing and it will be worth keeping an ear on how this show develops over the coming months and years. Hopefully, it lasts longer than his time at Corus.

Where is this new "Night Shift" show on?  Corus cancelled the original program but nothing said about where it is now?

"Night Shift" replaces NewsTalk Tonight on Bell Media's talk stations. Instead of being on overnights, it's now on 7-11PM  weeknights on the iHeart Talk Radio Network. CFRB is the flagship and Hewitt is now based out of Toronto.

7pm-11pm? They've extended it by an hour? Shane can certainly handle that, The Shift was a four hour program.

Its predecessor, NewsTalk Tonight, was also a 4-hour program in the same time slot.

One thing I didn't hear was whether any rerolls are involved. When Jim Richards hosted the show, they would do a segment called "The Rundown," a kind of Free-For-All Roundtable segment with two guests batting around issues of the day. That aired around 7:20 PM and lasted about half an hour.

But it was rerun in the 10 o'clock hour, so the entire show was not live and completely original. I suppose they thought no one listens to the whole thing, so what's the harm in repeating something three hours later? I can't imagine Hewitt doing that with anything from his first segment, but stranger things have happened.

Got it, was under the impression NewsTalk Tonight was scheduled as a three hour program.

I wonder if Shane moved to Toronto to do this show, or if he is hosting remotely from Calgary - IIRC his Corus Radio show was done from his home in Calgary via CKNW Vancouver.

I'm not sure, but I did hear him talking about driving halfway across Canada on one of his shows, which may indicate he's here in Toronto.

That topic sounds awfully close to violating a CRTC reg respecting 'advocating the committal of crime'. I remember Natasha Ramsahai (CBC Radio) got into a little hot water when she gushed about avoiding some Customs duty when cross-border shopping.

I don't see any reason why he'd need to move to Toronto for this.

Also, I'm really liking this show.

If talk radio had gone in this direction years ago it wouldn't be in the predicament it's in now.

He just mentioned he's doing the show from Ottawa. His Facebook profile also hints that's where he is now.

I listened on Monday and he did rerolls for two segments, about half an hour, and I am fairly certain that one of the segments that was played originally aired on the Rush on Friday afternoon. Having said that, I think Hewitt is doing a great job so far and wish him success.

Well, that's disappointing. But I get it. They think no one stays for the whole four hours, so there's no harm in repeating a key segment. And they're likely right.

But I remember the days when a four hour shift in the evening meant all original programming. Guess that era is over.

Yes, a bit disappointing, but I think you’re right that they think no one will listen the entire show, so why not rerolls. It could be just while Hewitt gets up and running, but doubt it!

The days/nights of four hours of original programming are sadly long gone, not sure why though.

I caught part of Shane's show in the middle of last night on 1150. He had a segment about time and space and Einsteins theory of relativity. It was really good. I wish I could have stayed up longer!
