Happy Canada Day!

This is actually from a CHUM Chart in Jan. 1969, but it shows even in a pre-CanCon era, some radio stations were supporting local artists.

Speaking of CanCon, this article from early 1970 shows that many stations didn't actually completely oppose the forced playlist of Canadian artists. What I find stunning is the reference to the CRTC initially planning to order 60% CanCon in primetime on TV stations! I can't imagine that being feasible and it certainly isn't the case today.

Happy Canada Day!  And RA decides to talk about.....cancon.  What a surprise...

It's a site about local and Canadian radio. What could be more appropriate on Canada Day? And you should be happy - I said nothing negative about CanCon in the original post.

You did say something negative. 60% cancon not feasible in prime time?  Seemed to be for CW, ION and ION Plus...

Re: Happy Canada Day!

It's cheap, ready made and available programming for networks without much of a budget. And I think you know that.

It certainly isn't feasible for CTV, Global or City, or they'd be doing it. But clearly the CRTC compromised on that amount because none of them are anywhere near 60% CanCon in primetime.

Ironic, though, that - with the exception of the CBC - a few U.S. networks have more daily primetime CanCon than any actual Canadian network.

Indeed The iON channels are operating under a completely different model where the actual programming doesn't matter so long as they can secure the rights and tie it to some loose theme. Instead of ratings, they sell ads based on potential audience: the total population covered by the stations' signals. The ads are then wide and *frequent*. It doesn't matter if anyone's watching. The programming is literally filler.

Re: Happy Canada Day!

We talked about this on May 5th.  Prime time in Canada isn't 8-11pm. The CRTC looks at 6pm-midnight and as prime viewing time.  Especially when programming outside of this narrow 8-11 time has higher ratings.  So prime time averages 50-60% cancon over the week and yes news counts.

Even in the US the 6:30 newscasts usually are the highest rated program of the evening.  And game shows like Family Feud and Wheel of Fortune at 7pm and 7:30 have more viewers in the US than the network programming following.

Nothing ironic at all, a few of the US smaller networks like ION and CW had more than 60% cancon in prime time, so it was feasible for them. That was my point, all you did was repeat what I already posted.  So not sure why you did this.   And yes CBC usually has 100% cancon in prime time.  However even the commercial networks do have evenings with heavy cancon like Saturday, sometimes Sunday.  And with less simsub over the past few years, even occasionally through the week.

And I am done.  Too nice a day, to talk about this again.   Happy Canada Day everyone...enjoy the day.

I'm still not entirely sure what your point is. But you are right about one thing - it's too nice a day to argue about such a silly point. I only put up the post as a SOWNY-oriented salute to Canada's 157th birthday. So let's leave it there.

That's irrelevant to anything happening here. You can put whatever you want on if you're not competing for viewers within the traditional model.

some days some posts definitely have a "being hit on the head lessons" vibe

Happy Canada Day to all 🇨🇦

Both ION and CW are traditional OTA networks.  They do compete for viewers.  The fact that both have carried a lot of cancon over the years and decades is absolutely relevant.  In fact ION might not have survived if it wasn't for their  schedules years ago that were dominated by programming from north of the border.
