Fox Sports Half Inning Baseball Broadcast Had Fans Raving. Here's Why.

The nationally televised game between the Giants and the Cardinals was played at Rickwood Field in Alabama last Thursday, in tribute to the long neglected Negro Leagues, which Major League Baseball is trying to correct and the recently passed Willie Mays, who played at the stadium.

It was a normal broadcast in most respects until half an inning, when the screen suddenly went to black and white, with old time supers counting balls and strikes. The idea was to recreate what watching baseball in the 50s and 60s looked like. In an era of HDTV and stereo, where graphics climb constantly all over the screen, you might think this would have annoyed modern day viewers.

But you'd be wrong. They went crazy for the tribute, lighting up social media with widespread praise for the unannounced special effect. A surprise for an otherwise uneventful inning that turned out to be a home run. You can watch it here

For others, the most memorable moments took place during an interview with Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson, who talked about the racism he had to endure when he played in Birmingham, Alabama during his time in the minors. Kudos to the Fox crew who gave him the chance to have his say on this sensitive subject.

That was well done.  Notice how there were no close ups of the players on the field.  Zoom lenses were rare for TV back in 1954 and most cameras had the turret lenses, which would set the focal length of the shot.  Also games would have been covered with 3 maybe 4 cameras rather than 8 or 9 for the average ball game today.

Wow. Fantastic idea. Love the fact they just did it without promoting the hell out of it. Now I wonder how it would've been received if they started the broadcast this way and done the first inning in full before reverting to "technicolour".
