How Long Can A Station's Morning Show Stay In Reruns?

I have an admittedly inordinate obsession with Sauga960, simply because it seems to be a radio station without any real purpose. And I like to occasionally monitor it just to see what they're up to.

The latest surprise - it appears their morning host, Marc Patrone, is in the middle of a health crisis. That's unfortunate and he's certainly entitled to time off to recuperate. The problem? The supposed "news/talk" morning show, which ostensibly deals with current events, has been airing reruns for weeks.

It's one thing to perhaps do that at night or on the weekend. But your morning show five days a week in almost endless reroll mode? Is there anyone in charge there? There's no substitute host that can sit in? I can't say I've ever heard of any radio station doing this for their most important show of the day, the morning drive shift.

And according to a message Patrone sent to his listeners, it may go on for a while.

"I'm going to have another procedure on June 12. That is designed to get rid of the stones I have in my kidneys and bladder. Hopefully it works. After that I'll be in recovery for a couple more weeks longer and then hopefully I can return to the show...

"It's hard for me not to be able to do the show like I was doing it but I really have no choice. I'm just in no position to do it right now I need to focus on my health, get better and then return."

While I wish him well, it's hard to imagine they don't at least try and find a substitute.

A station that appears to have its morning show in perpetual rerun mode. Another first for GTA radio! What an odd place it is.

To add insult to injury, Sauga replays Patrone's morning show at 1 PM on Monday and Tuesday. I just heard him open the program by saying, "Yes, we are live on this May 7th..."

So not only are they rerunning a month old morning show, they're re-rerunning it later in the day. As if it wasn't dated enough the first time!

Sheesh!

Guess there was nobody who wanted to purchase that particular block on short notice.

My thoughts exactly. But how ridiculous does it sound to say "today is May 17th" on June 4th?

Not that they have a lot of listeners and there's nothing wrong with a host getting sick. Hey, it happens. But have they never heard of a temporary replacement until he's well enough to return? I can practically guarantee however few listeners there are, they have even fewer of them now.

Isn’t the station being offered for sale through a U.S. statoin broker?  Wanna bet the owner doesn’t want to put more money into programming until he cashes in?

So, do they replay the same traffic and weather reports every day?

I started out with nothing and I still have most of it.

No, those are different and as up to date as the station gets. It's just the morning show that's rerolled, seemingly for weeks on end now. How hard could it be for Patrone, presuming he's paying the freight, to find a willing substitute host?

If the whole point of having the slot is ego, which it is, he would hate anyone else being on in his slot -- especially if they're good.

It's like CTV London. They no longer carry any news on the weekend. So, on Monday, we get to see the news from the last 3 days.

I started out with nothing and I still have most of it.

Re: How Long Can A Station's Morning Show Stay In Reruns?

To answer the subject line about how long these morning rerolls can last, the answer appears to be a while yet.

Marc Patrone updated his status to listeners and it seems assured he won't be back anytime soon.

"Hey everyone, just an update about my health situation. Unfortunately it’s not all good news. The operation to obliterate a large stone in my bladder was a success. However my body is not functioning on its own and so I had to be catheterized.

I’ve got an appointment with my urologist today so I’ll see what the next move is. Apparently this is not out of the ordinary. I was hoping to sail through this with flying colors and start doing the show again next week. That is not to be. I’m so grateful to all of you for sending notes of support and encouragement. I know it sucks to have repeats on but who can replace me, (lol)?"

They've had a ton of stuff going on in Mississauga, including electing a new mayor. And events in Ottawa and Queen's Park, which he also likes to talk about, have been ramping up, even as we approach summer. Look, I hope he gets better. But how long can a station expected to be taken seriously (if they are) when their most important show of the day is constantly talking about stuff that happened in April and May?

I've heard of hosts getting sick. But I have to say I can't ever remember a situation like this one. If Sauga960 was an important station, this wouldn't be happening. As it is, I'm probably the only one who's even noticed! And that's only because I very occasionally tune in just to see what they're up to.

The answer, in this case, seems to be not much.

I've never listened; how much was he actually talking current local to Mississauga issues in the first place?

From the amount I've heard, it was rare, but I'm pretty sure he would have at least dealt with the election, given the eventual winner was from a certain political party he hated.
