Angry Gov't. MPs Call CBC To Account For Flawed Canadian History Show

With the Liberals in charge in Ottawa, you wouldn't expect the CBC to be the target of anything but praise and more money. But that's not the case this time, after a show marking Canada's 150th birthday has done anything but make the national broadcaster want to celebrate.

They're being called on the carpet for "The Story of Us," with producers being criticized for the portrayal of early Native Canadians, letting Anglophones play Francophones and for allegedly getting disputed facts about some areas of the country incorrect.

Now a Commons Committee is demanding the CBC explain what happened to a show made using taxpayer money.

Only in Canada could a national broadcaster screw up its own history and be accused of being politically incorrect while doing it. Which, I have a sneaky feeling, is really what's behind much of the criticism in the first place.

Pretty amazing fuss for a show I'm pretty sure almost no one is watching. Which may not be The Story of Us. But it's long been The Story of the CBC.

A quick follow-up. I just noticed the CBC's website has a story on this and there was one post in the comments section that literally made me laugh out loud. It's from someone named Glen Acanthus and it reads as follows:

"Why all the fuss? We should be use to CBC's poor quality by now.. They receive huge tax payers dollars (which really is annoying) and they produce the worst programming i have ever seen. Time to shut it down and save us all some money and embarrassment."

I believe that The National ran a story about this issue on Monday ???  No comment or concern from MPs in Ottawa, but disgust and anger from Quebec MNAs...

Which just about sums it all up for me. Not that I want to turn this into a different kind of discussion, because this isn't the right forum, but I learned a long time ago working in Canadian news one sure truism: No matter what the issue and no matter how much money you throw at them, Quebec will never, ever be satisfied and will always try to blackmail the rest of Canada for more. I long ago stopped wondering when fellow Canucks would realize that and frankly stop worrying about it.

I once asked MAD editor Nick Meglin during an interview what the"E." in Alfred E. Neuman stood for.

Decades later, I still remember his answer: "Enigma."

Boy, have we ever wandered far away from what this thread was originally about!

Trivia: His original name was Alfred L. Neuman.
