They've long since banned tobacco ads in the Great White North. Could all those endless betting spots be next? While Ontario recently put a stop to the commercials featuring famous athletes and celebrities hocking the pleasures of gambling, many groups are now asking Ottawa to take them all off the air entirely.
I'm sure this would not make the sports channels happy. They're a huge source of revenue. But would the feds actually consider it?
Canadian Lawmakers Pushed to Ban Sports Betting Ads Entirely

Please ban these ads immediately or sooner. They are why I no longer follow, among other things, pro and major-junior hockey.

Believe it or not...I'm OK with this.

Yeah, I kind of lean towards "Is the product legal or not?"
The dumbest one is alcohol ads everywhere but you can't advertise cannibis.

I recant my previous posit.
There should be a 100% tax applied to all radio and television advertising. The proceeds primarily going to funding media literacy curriculum in schools.

I am on the side of if it is legal then they should be allowed to advertise. Sadly gambling addictions were around a long time before the advertising. Banning the ads won't fix the problem. Basically the ads are advertising brand preference. There are also commercials to help those with gambling problems.
I do like this ad for Bet 375. ,vid:5DrwJvuXpgA,st:0

What an absolutely horrible ad. The worst.
It says people should fall in love with a sport, not for the admiration of the skill and glory of the game -- but for the amount of money it can bring you if you bet on it.
Personally I hate all gambling. I know that's just me but I really loath it.
It would be like if ads for alcohol glorified how great getting drunk is and laughing and cheering as people drink until they stumble around the streets and laugh hysterically.
I have always found it shocking that casinos offer incentives to customers to gamble more and more and risk all their money, then throw them out on the street when they are deemed to be harming themselves because they have become ruinously addicted.
It also disgusts me when governments hype lottos, with lines like "Why dream to the min when you can dream to the max?"
In my local convenience store down the street it always pains me when I see a lineup of very obviously poor people, some of them with mental issues, lining up to buy 20, 40 or more dollars on lottery tickets, and maybe win back a few dollars. If at all.
I see those same people go back outside the store to panhandle for more money to buy more lottery tickets.
