An Uncomfortable Night To Listen To Blue Jays On Radio

It's not just because they're facing the Orioles, who always seem to find a way to beat the home team. In this case, it's because Ben Shulman is clearly suffering from something that's left his voice hoarse and fading in and out. I can't imagine how he'll sound if this thing goes into extra innings!

What struck me though, is that Shulman used to be the emergency back-up for Ben Wagner, before he was let go. If Shulman Jr. really did get complete laryngitis, who would take his place? They got rid of Mike Wilner and it's fairly clear the current colour man, Chris Leroux, would not be up to the job. What would they do if Shulman ever completely lost his voice?

The way he sounds Monday night, there's a chance we might find out. My guess would be to revert to TV audio. But it strikes me they've left themselves pretty thin on the radio side if Shulman was ever unable to continue.

Usually have the radio sound on and TV sound off, not tonight, it's a chore to listen to his play-by-play.  Jays radio should have backup, no excuse here.

Re: An Uncomfortable Night To Listen To Blue Jays On Radio

I strongly suspected after Monday's debacle that Ben Shulman wouldn't be back the next night. Sure enough, he's nowhere to be heard as he struggles to recover from a bout of laryngitis that made the first game of the Orioles series a struggle.

He's been replaced, at least for one day, by Sportsnet's Eric Smith, who is doing a fairly credible job. His usual beat is as the colour guy for the Raptors. Hope Shulman gets well soon, but the previous game was almost impossible to listen to as he struggled to get the words out.

Jays games are so much better on TV than radio.
