I came across this nostalgic piece from a website in Sudbury. It talks about an annual summer event held in that city by then top 40 rocker CKSO-AM in the 70s. Apparently, they arranged a huge free concert at a local park every single year and it became not only an annual event, but a rite of passage for many teens in The Big Nickel.
Remembering when Sudbury celebrated summer with CKSO
I know CHUM, CKEY and CKFH sponsored many concerts here, including most famously the Beatles at MLG. And they had a few free events at the CNE. But you still had to pay an admission to get in the gates. This one was completely free. So outside of New Year's Eve at Nathan Phillips Square - which was really a City TV event - did any radio rocker ever have anything annual like this free to the public? I'm almost sure they did, but I honestly can't recall one.

Not free, but Edgefest was huge.

I remember CHUM had a few free concerts at Nathan Phillips Square, don't know if they were with any regularity though. Both CHUM and CFTR had free concerts at the bandshell at the CNE but unless you were a public school student you would need to pay to get into the Ex. And your admission to the Ex got you into Ontario Place and they had free concerts all the time.

I have a CKSO radio, I've tried to put a picture of it here, it doesn't show up, even though it appears in the upload window.

Not sure why it's not working but try this site:
Just drag your pic onto the page and it will upload it. Then seek out "Hotlink for Forums" from the list that appears, copy the link and paste all that text into the message window. It should show up here after you hit submit. Good luck. Love to see that pic.

Q107 put on a free show with The Black Crowes at G. Ross Lord Park in 1992.

I figured out the issue, ad blocker was on. [/url] I actually bought this from a Marketplace ad before I even considered moving to Sudbury this past February. I wonder how many more of these still exist. My wife who grew up in Sudbury, remembers when they were being given away by the station, likely in the 70's she thinks. The current FM rocker here has such a short playlist, it is monotnenus to listen to. I drive around the area all day delivering parts for the Napa franchise here now, I have been switching between CJRQ 92.9 , [ rock ] the country station at 91.7 , Rewind 103.9 [ 70's, 80's, 90's ] and CBC1 99.9 which has a studio in Sudbury and does a live afternoon drive show. I just discovered today that CBC Music is also available here at 90.1 FM. There is also a top 40 station that does not interest me , likewise the French stations.
