Global News Veteran Celebrates 35 Years On Air With Feel Good Stories

Susan Hay does community stories that mostly run as kickers at the end of Global's Toronto newscasts. The fact she's been at it for 35 years shows her work is anything but an afterthought.

“Everybody has a story.” TV veteran Susan Hay has spent 35 years making Torontonians feel heard

One of the great talents at Global... definitely remember when she'd co-host the Santa Claus Parade broadcasts when Global still had the rights, and I sometimes see her "Making A Difference" segments when my wife watches the 5:30 news after Y&R.

Also don't forget Hay's predecessor in the kicker category, the late Bill Bramah, as well as CFTO's Glenn Cochrane.

City TV also had one of these community reporters for a while - Brona Brown. I remember she and a cameraman actually came to my late grandmother's 100th birthday party. I'm sure the audience didn't care, but my family appreciated it.

Ah yes, I enjoyed the Glenn Cochrane segments. I think once his run ended, the closest that CFTO/CTV Toronto ever got to feel-good stories was Michelle Dube's What's Your Story? which, much like Susan Hay's segments, often ran at the end of the CTV newscast.

What's Your Story vanished completely after a round of CTV cuts a few years back, which I assume meant Michelle was too busy doing other duties to make up for the reduced staff and no longer had the time for those community kickers. A shame.
