Radio and the Roots of Country Music

This fascinating article posits that if it weren't for early radio, country music as we know it might not exist. It argues that since the established radio networks like NBC and CBS considered the music beneath them, it was left to the local stations to spread the twang. And spread it they did.

Lots of interesting historic photos, too, from a time long since gone by.

Re: Radio and the Roots of Country Music

The majority of winners at the CMA and other similar country music awards shows always seem to thank radio in their acceptance speeches. I can't say I can recall other genres of music artists doing it.

Why is it Canadian Country artists talk Orillia but sing Nashville even thought they don't get airplay there, excepting Shania of course?.

Re: Radio and the Roots of Country Music

Who knew that country music is a bit of a thing in Quebec?  And I am talking franco country music.  The CRTC licensed a new country radio station yesterday for Joliette.  Hit Country is the fifth francophone country station for Arsenal Media. The new station (CJOL) will have 25,000 watts for the small city a little over an hour north of Montreal.

Arsenal also has seven classic rock stations in the province including one in Joliette.
