Every Station Was In Reroll Mode On Victoria Day - Except One

If you were up early for some reason on holiday Monday and were looking for something - anything - on the radio that wasn't a reroll (with the exception of 680, which obviously can't go into repeat mode) it was slim pickings. Replays of Greg Bray filled AM640, while 1010 was busy airing a CP24 simulcast. The music stations had their usual content, much of which I'm betting was either voicetracked or automated.

But there was one hidden gem tucked away in a sea of repeats and it was on 610. CKTB in St. Catharines has a history of staffing live morning shows on stat holidays and Victoria Day was no different. They filled several hours with a Seinfeld-like morning show about nothing, but it was a fun nothing. (They did an entire segment trying to get anyone named "Steve" to call or text, for some reason.)

Karl Dockstader and his producer provided some entertaining filler with an almost regular version of Niagara In The Morning, and just the fact they were live and kidding around on the air was enough to keep it light and fun. But as I walked the dog early on a day when nothing was happening, it was nice to be able to tune into something that was live and wasn't TV audio filler.

Not only that, but they also had a live newscaster and - be still my heart! - an actual sportscaster.

I'm not sure why, but I've noticed this before on 610. Of all the stations in the Bell Media chain, this is the only one I know of that almost always has live programming on holidays. I'm frankly surprised Bell management allows it, because it usually means overtime pay and a day off in lieu if you work the stat. But that hasn't stopped 610 and even if the listener base was small, I, for one, appreciated what they were doing on Monday.

It amazes me that 610 is it's own privately run morning content for long week ends.
If CFRB wasn't too busy carrying CP24, they could have done an "Ontario show", repeating itself on 610 and other stations...for the same wages as what they're paying 610 currently. (for as long as they are in Bell hands)

Interesting suggestion, but to be fair, the wages at 610 are far less than what those at CFRB in the biggest market in the country would be paid. Still, overtime pay is expensive and it amazes me that CKTB does this almost every holiday. Good for them.

What happens when the station sale is finally complete is anyone's guess. So I suppose we should enjoy it while we can.

Darn.  Wish I'd known that.  1010 and 640 repeats were utter dreck.  Hey, Greg Brady, sorry your teenager's sleepover party was too loud, but what makes you think anybody listening to a 'News Talk' radio station gives a rat's arse?

No, they've gone continuous with a rolling average snapshot released twice a year.

Re: Every Station Was In Reroll Mode On Victoria Day - Except One

There weren't many rerolls in cottage country this past weekend.  The stations I tuned into on the drive up to Muskoka had May 24 special themed music and programming for the unofficial kickoff to summer.  And most stations had a very healthy commercial  load, some with live reports.

I heard a local favourite Simon McGhee on Barrie's Big 101 FM.  Simon does afternoons on Dave Rocks in Cambridge..  He is a great rock announcer, comes across as everyone's buddy and sounded equally at home with the more pop sounding classic hits format of Big 101.  I am assuming Simon was voice tracked but you wouldn't know.  Similar to his Dave Rocks show, lots of longer and frequent breaks.  His show here has a few contests with callers live on air and Simon also does traffic/weather breaks through the afternoon and the odd request.
