CHCH hits 70 Years in June!

This June, CHCH will celebrate 70 years on the air.
They will be airing segments on Morning Live and the Evening News from June 3rd to 7th. Expect to see some former CHCH staff such as Paul Hendrick, Alex Reynolds, Fred Anderton and the legends Dan McLean and Connie Smith will also be featured.

This was posted on the Fans of CHCH News Facebook page, and posted by Don Jonescu, who works on Morning Live:

Hello, We are having our 70th Anniversary Panel this Thursday. It will be parsed out over the next few months. But we are wondering what respectful questions you would have for Connie, Dan and Alex about the industry and their time at CHCH. Post here if you would like or Tips@chch.com title it 70TH ANNIVERSARY. Thanks.

Here's a weird piece of trivia as noted in this story from 1953: CHCH was originally supposed to be on Channel 13. I'm not sure what changed or what might have happened to CKCO in Kitchener if that had come to pass.

Anyone know why the signal was directional?

Re: CHCH hits 70 Years in June!

A story I had read or heard:  The station's founder Ken Sobol was superstitious:  the CRTC granted CHCH license and the Channel 13 frequency.   Sobol said he didn't want Ch 13..."give it to Kitchener."  (they must have been applying at the same time) The CRTC assigned Hamilton Channel 11 and for a time it was known as "Lucky Channel 11".

The CBC (the regulator then) decreed that signal contours were not to overlap. In fact CHCH was an exception to itd policy that stations had to be 45-50 miles apart. Therefore they couldn't send a strong signal into Toronto. But viewer response led to signal increases over the years on the original Wavestack anenna. Once the BBG took over regulatory duties from the CBC they would get to max power, and eventually to that massive tower that came down a couple of months ago.

I wonder if CHCH is going to have an open house for the 70th birthday.  I would love to tour the new facilities and building.

There was a draw for 35 people, and a guest, (35 + 35 = 70) to be an in studio audience for Morning Live. I'm not sure if it was on June 7th, but that is the actual anniversary day. You can watch the show, tour the station, and meet on air personalities and staff. Breakfast and refreshments are provided.

That's about all I've seen for anything regarding a tour.
