What does this say about the news business and a once-cherished truism of broadcasting? WKBW-TV is admitting that most of its 11 PM news is pre-recorded. The station says only the weather and late breaking news is done in the moment, while the rest is on what we used to call tape.
I suppose there's technically nothing wrong with it, as long as they have someone there for an immediate bulletin. But as something of a traditionalist, there's something about pre-taped local news that rubs me the wrong way. Would this bother anyone else?
WKBW's pre-recorded news is sign of a changing business

I'm pretty sure CHCH is recorded at 11pm as well. Which is why I don't understand why Taz Boga gave up the position. It's not like she has to stay late. While she still anchors at 6pm, having new anchors at 11pm just seems weird because it's not live.
I know sports used to be live at 11pm, while the rest was per-recorded, but now the sports segment is usually a clip from the Sportsline podcast, rather than actual sports. That doesn't bother me too much, because who is really looking at a local station for pro sports, with 24hr sports channels, apps, websites, etc.
Anyway, I feel that the 11pm is taped right after the 6pm so no one has to stay late. I haven't watched the 11pm in a while, but I don't even think anyone works for breaking news.

I don't see anything wrong with recording a newscast, say 20 minutes before it is supposed to air.
But hours ahead of time? That's taking a big chance that the news will be outdated by air time.
Also having someone stay in case there is breaking news kind of defeats the point of recording the news so people can leave work several hours earlier.
The most problematic aspect is recording sports.
How can you record a sports cast when several games will have been over by your 10pm newscast.
Do you omit scores because you did not know the final score when you left at 6pm?
I guess it comes down to whether a TV or radio station cares about having accuracy or whether having no evening crew and saving money is more important.

During CTV newscasts at 11 and 11:30. The weather segments are pre-recorded. London is live at 11 and Kitchener’s is also live at 11:30 as well. I don’t understand why weather segments are pre-recorded before the newscasts at 11 and 11:30 on the CTV and CTV 2 stations.
