Chances are pretty good you never heard of Sam Rubin. But if you were working or living in Los Angeles, he was a household name as the long time entertainment reporter for KTLA-TV, where he spent more than 30 years.
Rubin had been on the air on Thursday but called in sick on Friday. The station staff were stunned when they learned soon after that he had passed away suddenly of a heart attack and they were forced to deal with the extremely unexpected death of one of their own with their newscast in progress. Rubin was only 64.
I have rarely seen a newsman break down in tears on the air. But it happened as anchor Frank Buckley tried desperately to contain his emotions and report this story to viewers. It's hard to watch but pretty unusual and a remarkable moment of true emotion you rarely see on those otherwise polished TV newscasts.

He was clearly very well-known in the entertainment industry, as many actors have posted on social media mourning his death - I’ve seen poste by Tom Hanks, Ryan Reynolds, Kiefer Sutherland, Tom Green, and Greg Grunberg so far.
I’m reminded of the City newscast after Mark Dailey died - very sad.

I watched him daily on KTLA on cable. He presents his entertainment reports with no flash - unlike ET and the others. It was just the facts sprinkled with his own brand of humour and perspective.
He was one of the original anchors of the KTLA Morning News 33 years ago. That morning show is the gold standard on how local morning news should be done, and he was one of the big reasons why that broadcast is so successful. He also contributed entertainment reports for the equally successfully WGN Morning News in Chicago, and recently for FOX 5 San Diego, Nine Network Australia, ITV’s This Morning programme in the UK, and his parent company’s cable news channel NewsNation.
And just about everyone who has paid tributes to Sam Rubin mention how generous and kind he was to everyone he met - from big celebrities, to his colleagues, to viewers he runs into on the street.
He will be dearly missed.
