Pattison Media now owns 3 FM stations in Kelowna BC, a city of about 140,000 people with 10 radio outlets. A few days ago the recently purchased property was changed from Lake FM to OV 103.9 That 70's Station.
The new station focuses on listeners 50+ and compliments Pattison's two other outlets- The Lizard (New and Alternative Rock) and Beach Radio which features 80's-90's hits. The new call letters and format also pays tribute to CKOV which was the Okanagan Valley's first radio station in 1931.
OV 103.9 has local news every half hour in the morning and hourly news all day. Music is from the 70's with a little 60's in the mix. Most shows are live.
Here is the launch... (skip ahead to 5:45 to miss local news/weather/sports prior to the actual change over) Notice the remake of That 70's Show Theme song, and the old CKOV jingle.

My gut tells me this 50+ targeting is a trend...finally.

This is incorrect. Most of the shifts outside of mornings are tracked from other Pattison stations.

But since you said "most of the shifts outside of mornings" means that some others are live? There was some discussion about this on RadioWest.ca since the announcers seem to be talking about songs they are playing with intos and extros of music. This doesn't normally happen with voice tracked shows. The all request show at noon sounds like it is live.

It can be done very easily if you're tracking a single station and not a chain of them where the music may be slightly different on each station.

See Vista Sechelt as a good example.

I listened to some of the afternoon drive show yesterday and if it was VT it sounded live. There was only one break I heard that sounded like it might have been recorded because the level of the music was a little high under the announcer. Other than that, he was doing lots of breaks, listener phone in's, intros and extros, weather, hitting posts and vocals on songs. About the only thing I didn't notice was any time checks which many announcers don't do anyway other than in the mornings.
The station claims that their playlist is thousands of songs mostly from the 70's and a sprinkling of 60's. For concon the Pattison stations also have a slight emphasis on bands from Western Canada, groups and songs we rarely hear. Also noticed a fair number of local coming events, and the top of the hour news/weather/sports was mostly local stories.
After the newscasts they have also been running their customized version of That 70's Show theme song, to introduce the new format.
Listen Live here..
