Veteran Cdn. Newsman Who Worked At All Major TV Nets Gone At 91

Not sure how I missed this, but worth noting the passage of a veteran Canadian newsman last month.

His name was Bill Cunningham and while he may not be a household name to many these days, he played a huge part in Canadian TV journalism. He reported on the Vietnam War  for the CBC (even being taken prisoner for a time), before eventually becoming the head of the network's news division.

It was Cunningham who rebranded the major CBC nightly news "The National" because he was hoping to simplify the name. Some 40 years later, the title lives on.

Cunningham also worked for Global as V.P. of news in its early days and later toiled for CTV as the very first exec. producer for W5, and also as its host.

Quite a legacy. This pioneer of Canadian TV news was 91 when he passed on January 31st.

There are a number of tributes to him at the obit page below, including messages from Kevin Newman, Adrienne Clarkson, Peter Feniak and Todd Battis.
