Actually my headline and many others are incorrect. The Super Bowl on Sunday likely wasn't even the most watched sporting event in history. Maybe in North America but not worldwide. Apparently, World Cup finals have viewership in the billions around the world. The Super Bowl is huge in the US and Canada and although gaining in popularity elsewhere, nowhere near World Cup Soccer or some Olympic events.
NBC estimated that the funeral of Diana had 2.5 billion viewers in 1997 and some estimates for Queen Elizabeth's funeral up to 4 billion worldwide. But this number has been disputed, and world wide ratings are hard to verify. From Newsweek...
This year's Super Bowl was the highest rated in Canada with an average of over 10 million viewers but far behind coverage for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. The highest rated event in Canada was the 2010 men's hockey gold medal final between the US and Canada that had 16.6 million viewers.
