Netflix Documentary Looks At The "Greatest Night In Pop" Music History

If you have Netflix, you can now see an extraordinary documentary on the making of "We Are The World," the charity single recorded in 1985, featuring a record number of superstars. You know the names by now - Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Michael Jackson, Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder and more.

The special, "The Greatest Night In Pop," promises never-before-seen footage and highlights tensions behind the scenes, as massive egos clashed while piled into a recording studio.

“The Greatest Night in Pop” isn’t shy about exploring some of the more unflattering things, like Al Jarreau having a bit too much wine and how Dylan was out of his element, needing Wonder to mimic how the Nobel laureate might approach his solo.

[Cyndi] Lauper accidentally prolonged the recording session because her jangling jewelry fouled up the recording, while Prince, who was at a Mexican restaurant on the Sunset Strip, offered to do an isolated guitar solo. Sheila E confesses she felt like she was invited to the recording session just to lure Prince in. In the end, Prince never made it, robbing the single of a Jackson-Prince double punch."

Perhaps the most interesting factoid of all to me is that the director of this doc was only 2 years old when the single came out. Yet he still was obsessed with telling its story. It debuted on Netflix Monday and is available now if you subscribe to the service.

Odd how the "Greatest Night In Pop" produced such a rather pedestrian tune.
