Netflix Canada Ending $9.99/Month Ad Free Tier For All Subscribers

The streaming giant announced last year that it would be getting rid of its ad-free basic $9.99 a month tier for new subs, but now it's decided to eliminate it entirely for anyone who was grandfathered into a current agreement, too. It means you'll either have to downgrade to a package that costs 6 bucks a month - one that offers more ads - or pay $16.49 to keep your feed ad free.

It's starting this in Canada first, but the U.K. will soon follow.

Even if you're not a Netflix subscriber, you may not be able to escape this elsewhere. Unfortunately, this seems to be the new pattern at all the streaming services, which are looking to increase revenues while the cost of producing their shows soar.

Weren't some cable channels originally commercial free?  Streaming is going the same route. Some streamers may not have long commercial breaks right now, or few breaks compared to OTA TV.   Give it a few years.  Too many channels and not enough viewers.

Netflix already makes more per customer from commercials than it does from its top priced tier. That tells you that the subscription model doesn’t work sadly.

If you mean included in the cable, no. If you mean adding an extra fee to the cable service, then yes.
I believe Hollywood suite is still around today, but it always required an extra fee. It was never included free simply for being a cable customer. (although that too may have changed, included in higher end cable packages today?)
