I turned on CKTB purely by chance around 5:45 PM Thursday and was surprised to hear Tom McConnell doing a guest "Roundtable" type appearance on 610 (a segment called "Rapid Fire.") I'd almost forgotten how much I enjoyed his old afternoon show. (He left to become the news director at CFPL-TV.)
When asked what he was doing these days, he said his only job was in TV news (presumably subtly referring to the demise of CJBK-AM, where he was also P.D.) He reflected that TV was very different from radio and his only job is ensuring the news gets on the air - and trying to stay out of the way. He confirmed that he has no desire to ever go back on radio and he's happy with his new duties.
He also mentioned that he would be on Friday's 75th CFPL anniversary special, the only time he's appeared on camera since he took the gig. And incredibly, he noted that he drives to work every day - from his home in St. Catharines, leaving at 7 AM to get to London in time! It takes another two hours to get home.
Good luck on that commute during the winter, especially since both cities get more than their share of snow.
Either way, it was great hearing him again. I wish he was on more often. He says he will be back on the radio at his old stomping ground - but not until another special appearance next Christmas.
