If you ever listened to John Oakley during his tenure at AM640, you'll probably remember those live commercials he did for a place called Highstreet Fish and Chips and another named "McNie's Lovely Grub." He regularly referred to them on almost every show and talked about how he would eat free there all the time and meet his fellow cronies at the place.
Turns out the "McNie "was Frank McNie and I noticed his short obit in the pages of the Toronto Star last Saturday. He passed away on Nov. 21st, although it doesn't say how old he was. But it does note that McNie had a few broadcasting friends.
"John Oakley of 640 AM Radio has been a great friend and supporter. With CFRB’s Ray Sonin and Ed Needham’s support in the early years."
I'm not sure what happened to those ads, but when McNie retired to Niagara On The Lake and turned the business over to his kids, the spots stopped and I haven't heard Oakley mention a single word about the place or McNie since. But I do remember those commercials, which ran for many, many years on 640.
One other very strange coincidence. The obit notes that McNie was pre-deceased by his brothers David and Clayton, and his brother-in-law, Thomas. David, Clayton, Thomas. For a guy who put Blood, Sweat and Tears into his restaurant businesses, what are the odds?
