Dan Shulman's Broadcasting Career Started Because A Line Was Too Long

How did you get started in broadcasting? For Dan Shulman, the TV voice of the Blue Jays on Sportsnet, it was because of a long line at a campus newspaper at the University of Western Ontario in London. He was hoping to volunteer for the publication, but with about 150 people waiting in line ahead of him, he gave up. Instead, he wandered over to CHRW, the 50-watt station run by the school.

And things took off from there.

"For those first three years in London, Ont., Shulman cut his teeth calling Mustangs basketball, football and hockey games. He also co-hosted a talk show called “From the Cheap Seats.”

“Half the calls were inevitably buddies of mine just messing with me,” Shulman said with a laugh. “My roommate would call and say, ‘Could you pick up some milk on the way home?’ and stuff like that. You could have made a sitcom out of it.”

Speaking of Jays broadcasters up for an award...

(By the way, how perfect is it that the chair of the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame is named "Diamond?")

Re: Dan Shulman's Broadcasting Career Started Because A Line Was Too Long

Dan Shulman didn't win the Frick Award. Instead, it went to a real veteran - Joe Castiglione. the 41-year voice of the Boston Red Sox, who suffered through the team's long losing streak before finally seeing them win the World Series.

Shulman had said he didn't really expect to win and was honoured to be nominated - but he could be up for the award again one day.
