World's Oldest Radio Show Turns An Amazing 98 Yrs. Old Tuesday
There's really only one program it could be and it's almost as old as radio itself. The Grand Ole Opry debuted on Nov. 28, 1925 and has been on the air every week since. And the fact that it's been on the same station - WSM Nashville - all these years just adds to the impressive stat. It currently airs Friday and Saturday nights from 7 PM - 9:15 PM.
The Opry helped launch artists like Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn, to name a few.
It's an incredible record that, given the current state of radio, I believe I can safely say will never be matched.

In England the oldest BBC show is The Archers which began in 1951.
When you visit The BBC Experience in London you can act in a mockup scene from the radio soap opera.
They give you a script and you read your part along with a pre-recorded mock episode.
Then you can pay to get a copy for yourself.

My wife's birthday is also today. But she isn't 98 yet.

I attended a live broadcast at the Opry in 1982 and WSM was broadcasting. All I remember there were no major country artists performing that night and the announcer for WSM who read live commercials didn't get through one without stumbling. For a legacy station during a live broadcast on a Saturday evening this guy was brutal. Didn't appear that he read any of the copy over ahead of time.
