"As God Is My Witness, I Thought Turkeys Could Fly"

As the U.S. celebrates its Thanksgiving on Thursday, comes this classic television event. It aired for the first time on Nov. 24, 1978, and it's one of the best remembered moments ever on TV - the WKRP in Cincinnati episode when the station tried to give away free turkeys from a helicopter.

It was an absolute disaster, of course, ending with a wicked satire on the Hindenburg zeppelin tragedy in 1937.

Here's WLS' Herbert Morrison's original broadcast, in case you've never heard it.

Re: "As God Is My Witness, I Thought Turkeys Could Fly"

I wasn't aware until I read this, but as unbelievable as it seems, that infamous "Turkey Day" episode of WKRP in Cincinnati was based on a real stunt. it happened at the end of the 1950s by pioneering Top 40 station KBOX in Dallas. Or did it?

Still, there are those who differ with this version of the story, and say it happened - but not the way it was portrayed in the show. It's a bit lost to history, but it's astounding to find out something involving turkeys and a real radio station actually did take place. And now it's forever enshrined in what is arguably the most famous episode of WKRP ever made.
