Now You Know With Rob Snow will debut on four stations across Canada on Monday. CityNews stations in Halifax, Kitchener, Calgary and Vancouver will schedule the new talk show. In Kitchener the program will run 1-4pm. Anywhere else in the country you can listen on line. More details from CityNews..

This leaves Toronto as the only CityNews station left running a pure all-news format.
(cue the pedantry about the very occasional sports spillover)

Kind of ironic that the guy the article labels a "Canadian radio icon" (really?) has been a broadcaster in Ottawa for over 25 years and yet it's the one place listeners who might know him best won't be able to hear him over the air, with the shutdown of CityNews 1310.

I listened to a few minutes of this Monday over CKGL out of Kitchener. It was actually better than I thought it might be, especially for an initial outing.

He's been doing it for 20 years in the Nation's Capitol

It's often a different animal when you're going (semi) national in terms of direction and how it's handled. But he didn't miss a beat.

I would think it’s easier to go national when you’re doing a show from the nation’s capital for that long. Many of the topics are national by default if you’re covering politics. I’d be interested to compare and contrast it to Vassy’s show.

I have been listening and comparing this show to Vassy’s show.
She seems to get bigger guests. While Vassy gets the deputy prime minister Rob Snow gets the head of a conservative think tank to talk about the deputy prime minister. Rob Snow does utilize the resources of City News by doing panels of local reporters in the various markets to discuss local issues in each. He also uses the City News parliamentary reporter, Cormac McSweeney to discuss the week ahead and breaking news. He has also used Sportsnet reporters and a City News business reporter.
While Vassy is tough on all three parties with no discernible bias, Rob Snow has a conservative view on everything.
When Vassy interviews a guest she seems very engaged and reacts to anything unexpected quickly. Rob Snow can take up to four seconds to ask a follow up question and when the conversation takes an unexpected turn says, “Yeah yeah yeah” very quickly and gets back to his prepared questions. It happens a couple of times per show.
Vassy covers everything in two hours and Rob Snow uses three, often touching on the same topic in the same way more than once.
Lastly, at the end of a segment Rob Snow will wrap it up as though it’s the definitive take on the topic by saying in an over top way, emphasizing the rhyme, “And now you know. I’m Rob Snow” It’s condescending and a bit cheesy.
I would give Vassy an A and Rob Snow a B-. I would have expected a better roster of guests on his show. His two biggest guests have been Alberta premier Danielle Smith and Ontario economic development minister Vic Fedeli. Vassy has that calibre of guest every day.
