Thurs. Nov 2nd, 10 AM: Final Beatles Song To Be Released Online/On-Air

It could very well be one of the biggest things to ever happen on the Internet: the official release of the very last ever "new" Beatles record, a song called "Now & Then." It features vocals from Paul McCartney and the late John Lennon, his voice taken from a very old and poor quality cassette that technology has only now been able to rescue.

The linked article below has the great story about the set of astounding coincidences that resulted in this last song, one that some believe was almost fated to happen. Even if you don't believe in that kind of stuff, it's a pretty amazing tale. But the Nov. 2nd release on a host of platforms won't be the end of it.

"In keeping with the “Now and Then” theme, the double A-side single pairs the last Beatles song with the first, “Love Me Do.”

A music video for “Now and Then,” directed by Peter Jackson, will also premiere on Friday, Nov. 3, preceded by a 12-minute documentary film featuring exclusive footage and commentary from McCartney, Starr, Harrison, Jackson, and Sean Ono Lennon set to debut on the Beatles YouTube channel at 3:30 p.m. EST on Wednesday, Nov. 1."

There are several other homages to the long-dispersed group, including a George Harrison-like guitar riff and production by Giles Martin - the son of legendary Beatles producer George Martin.

My question: no matter how bad or how good this is, can it ever actually live up to the hype? Or should they just have Let It Be? We'll find out exactly a week from today.

iHeart Radio in the U.S. has also announced it will be airing the final tune at exactly 10 AM Eastern Time next Thursday. And the format of the stations involved won't matter.

"Fans can tune-in to iHeartRadio Classic Rock, Classic Hits, CHR, Country, AC, Hot AC, News / Talk, Sports and more stations on November 2 at 10 a.m. ET to hear the last Beatles song “Now And Then.” iHeartRadio Classic Rock Stations will continue to broadcast the single every hour throughout the day."

In all, more than 740 stations will be taking part in this one-time-only event. There's no word if Canadian stations here will follow suit, but there's no question there will be high interest in the release.

The CBC has declared itself the exclusive home of the short documentary made about the last ever Beatles song. They'll be showing it on the network and Gem on Wed. Nov 1st at 3:30 PM, with an encore at 11:30 PM. (Although by then, it will be all over the Internet.)

The BBC, as you can imagine, is also getting ready to mark this historic final recording on their various radio networks. Included among the programming is this podcast special called "Eras: The Beatles." The description sounds compelling:

"The story is told as never before with extensive archive and in the band’s own words. It features a newly-rediscovered interview with George Harrison, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr – unheard for almost 60 years - as well as a new interview with Paul McCartney on the making of ‘Now And Then.’

A reporter from the Los Angeles Times has gotten a preview of "Now & Then" and says it lives up to the quality you expect from the Beatles. The rest of us will find out on Thursday.
