When was the last time you saw a TV ad for a Toronto radio station? They used to be pretty ubiquitous on television stations here. But I can't really remember the last time I saw one recently.
This has been up on YouTube for a while, from our friends at the great Retrontario, but I've only recently come across it. It's a 13-minute sample of some great GTA radio ads from the 1980s and 1990s. Among those getting in a word from their sponsor: CBL (then at 740), Q107, CHUM-FM, CHUM-AM, CFTR (both featuring Tom Rivers at differing times in his career), CFNY and CHFI, all of whom had great spots. (Some of the CHFI ones feature the late Don Daynard and Erin Davis, and even a guest appearance from WKRP's "Herb Tarlek.")
And there are a few obscure ones, as well, like CFGM, CJCL (in its Music of Your Life phase), CKEY and CHAY in Barrie. Worth a look if you're into memory flogging. I'm betting you've seen most of them, but to me the best one remains the "naked" campaign that CHUM-FM put on a few decades ago. Still very memorable, and "it's all you need to put on."

Virgin Radio, CHUM FM, CHFI, Q107, Kiss 92.5 and a few others have ads/promo on TV in Toronto often. Maybe you don't watch much Toronto TV RA?? Locally where I am I see ads for the local Virgin, Bounce, CHYM FM, Pure Country, 106.7 Country stations fairly often. CHCH has ads for 92.1 Lite FM, 92.9 The Grand and Bounce.
Granted many of these are on sister TV stations (Bell or Rogers stations) but CHFI and City News 680 do show up on CBC Toronto from time to time, and CHCH is not affiliated with any of the stations mentioned that they have on air.
Great to see these old radio commercials, brings back some memories.

You are correct. I DVR everything and skip all the commercials, which means I don't see what you do. As I said, I can't remember the last time I saw one. But they certainly don't air as often as they used to.
That said, those oldies are truly goodies, a time when radio still had a decent sized audience and before streaming, when TV was the major way to see your show outside of say, Blockbuster.
Some of the campaigns were pretty dull - the CHAY and CKEY ones, for example, were in keeping with the soft sounds of the stations but they weren't too compelling. But I thought the CFTR and the CHFI campaigns were pretty good. Anytime you get to see Frank Bonner as Herb Tarlek is a bonus!
