I have to hand it to the promotions department at CityNews 680. Outside of the "Weather Guarantee," which still seems odd to me, it would seem almost impossible to come up with an appropriate contest for an all-news station, especially when the headlines are as grim as they are these days. But now they're repeating an old favourite - the search for the city's youngest traffic reporter, sponsored by the 407.
To enter, you have to be in grades 1-12, and read the following copy, which they provide:
"CityNews time 6:31 – time for traffic and weather together on the ones, I’m ______________________.
There’s a collision on the eastbound Gardiner at Jameson, blocking the left lane, and traffic is very slow from Park Lawn.
The southbound Don Valley Parkway is trouble-free but also busy from the 401 to the south of Lawrence.
On the eastbound 401, a crash at Yonge in the express is blocking the left lane and causing delays from the Allen in the express.
We also have a crash northbound on Don Mills at Lawrence blocking the right lane. Get there faster and enjoy a stress-free commute, Highway 407 ETR gives drivers more time for things that matter most. Follow @ 4-0-7 E-T-R on social media to learn more.
Now with the forecast, here’s Jill Taylor!
The winner gets $500, a tour of the station, an on-air appearance and a chance to meet some of the newscasters. (I'm not sure why a Grade 1 student would be listening to an all-news station, but let's just go with it for the moment.) The winner's school gets another $500.
Now if only there was a contest for retired traffic specialists, Jody Thornton would be a shoe-in!
