Broadcasters down south are urging the FCC to let them up the power on their HD stations, in order to increase their range and have them stop nulling out in more distant areas. Six different owners of major stations are asking the U.S. commission to allow for the extra juice, arguing the "newer system" won't catch on until listeners can be assured they can reliably get the stations.
“The Commission’s proposed change to the digital FM power increase methodology will further the already-impressive penetration of the digital FM radio service without creating any unacceptable risk of interference,” NAB and Xperi say in joint comments. Although HD Radio is “thriving,” they say the proposal will finally allow broadcasters to take full advantage of the flexibility provided by the technology."
I'm not so sure about that last statement, but if Buffalo turned up the power on some of its existing HD outlets, would that do anything to cause increased interference on adjacent stations on this side of the border?
