I must say she's one of my most absolute favourite announcers. She has a voice that to me, defines CHUM-FM. I'll be sad not to hear here anymore

This is a damned shame.
One of the all-time most pleasant and natural-sounding persons I've ever had a chance to listen to, period.

Inexcusable they did not wait 'til Friday for her annual heartfelt Buddy Holly/Ritchie Valens tribute, before dusting her

Ingrid Schumacher on CHUM-FM

maybe she had mental health issues? friggin bell....
So sorry to see Ingrid have to join 'the club'. She isn't the first. She won't be the last. Perhaps it was her outstanding talent which allowed her to outdistance the grim reaper of radio for as long as she did. The audience ALL 'get' talent, ability and class. Management never has...because they don't have any of those attributes. If they did they wouldn't be in management. They would be on the air...getting fired by entirely oversized assholes just like they are.
Online!
Half the age, half the wage!
What is Bell going to do down the road when everyone is already working for "half the wage"?
The bean counters are never going to be happy enough...
Offline
It must be a big deal if it actually made the Star publish anything about local radio.
The difference between her high road comments and that of management speaks volumes, without either one saying very much at all.
Ingrid Schumacher out at CHUM FM after 40 years
There once was a DICKWEED named 'Garrow'...
Whom Ingrid had over a barrel.
For Bell ... he's been crass,
And by firing her ass...
Now...She'll be suing their bones to the marrow.

Many bell layoffs. Heather Blackman in Montreal, Scott rintould and Peter schaad in Vancouver as well as Coleen Christie from ctv
Anyone have some discrete contact info/e-mail for Ingrid? I have something she may be able to make use of going forward in the immediate future. Please p.m. me. Ta.

But if discrete contact info is passed to you, would the individual sharing it be committing an indiscretion?

This is terrible. These people at Bell just don't get it. I'm assuming She's going to sue them for every nickel she can get, but that's just money.
I like that she's putting on the brave face, but what does someone like her do after 40 years at the same station?
CHFI maybe?

There comes a time when one has to decide...Do I want another round of this same old shit? Is there actually a place to work, in the big smoke, where they REALLY do appreciate me and value what it is that I personally have to offer? Is there a time-slot, other than morning drive, which really comes with the security which will allow me to decide exactly WHEN *I* have finally finished doing what it is that I truly enjoy doing?
The answer to those questions...questions which may actually matter to a talented broadcaster...is NO!!!
So?
You grab as much dough as you can. After 40 years that will be a LARGE number. And you say to yourself..."You know what? These clowns are a gross, collective herd of no-talent 'arsewipists' who aren't worth giving any more of my time to. They don't care about me. They sure as shit don't care about the audience. For them it's just cold, hard, heartless, bottom-line business. Not even the advertisers count. It's only about coming in UNDER budget and making the bottom line attractive for current and interested shareholders. Do I really want to try again and watch as the career I spent so many years cultivating slowly but surely flutters to the ground like some dead leaf as I vainly clutch and grab at 1 or 2 last 'kicks at that rusty old can'? Fuck THAT!!! !!! !!!"
CHFI? For what? More ultimate disrespect? When Ingrid first arrived at see-humm FM...she had some hand in what she presented to the audience she spent her time cultivating. They came to know her in oh-so many ways. Her show, presentation, style and personality were unique. People came to know her...to trust her...to make her destination listening...a good habit...as a member of the family. In spite of dime-a-dozen, piss poor programming...programming that was slowly taken almost completely out of her hands...she had established her credibility with the most important asset the radio station owned. And that? That is the people who spend their time listening to it. Without them see-humm FM has diddly-squat.
It's what they deserve. Ingrid and other PROS just like her deserve FAR BETTER. So too does the audience but that will never be recognized by THIS fading 'industry'. It's why radio, as we know it, is about 2 generations away from becoming entirely extinct. No head. No heart. No pulse.
Yep. As someone caught up in one of these rounds, I can say they have their legal ducks in a row, paid out way more than legally required, and were really quite civil about it.

My condolences to you on losing a gig at this time in this market. Been there, done that. Hopefully, you'll be back up and running soon.

Forty years at one station is an incredible run, Wally Crouter territory (50 years). Heck, 40 years in radio itself is a great career. John Donabie has already cracked the half-century mark, having started at CKLB Oshawa in 1965 and now doing a Saturday show at CIUT with various stations in between. Roger Ashby is approaching 48 years at CHUM and CHUM-FM, having done his first on-air gig radio 50 years ago at CFCA Kitchener. Roger Christian has been on 102.5 in Buffalo (then Rock 102 - WBEN-FM, now Star 102.5 - WTSS) for almost 41 years, and in radio for over 50 years. But longevity like this in radio is quite rare as we all know.

CHFI maybe?Sue them? For what, being bloodless dickheads? She had a 40 year career, and they packaged her off, likely using the old 'We're going a different direction" bull-shit. They don't want her, or her salary and benefits anymore, and are within their rights to legally toss her aside. They'll all get the same crappy treatment one day. End of an all-too-familiar story.
Geez, you're a little angry eh? I'm well aware that they're bloodless dickheads. Do you know something we don't about her package? I'd be asking Lior Samfiru if it's adequate.

Instead of making it about "TALENT" vs the "CORP" - the conversation should be about "TALENT" being all about "TALENT". Reverse it - No one would be mad at Ingrid if she decided to leave CHUM-FM to go somewhere else after 40 years? No, we would all say "Go Girl". The reality of having a performance based job is YOU are in CONTROL of your own destiny . You are the one that sets what your TALENT is worth. You build your brand. If you are solely defined by "a shift" then you are a slave to that "shift" so you'd better make sure you have a deep connection with audience and an army of fans... otherwise you can be replaced. The CORP is giving you a microphone, a pay-cheque, a stage, an opportunity - what EACH person does with it - is up to them. CORPS are CORPS - they won't change no matter how much we complain. They are driven by the bottomline - that's it, that's all. There is a long list of "TALENT" that command more respect, pay and outside opportunities than other folks - It doesn't happen by accident and rarely by length of service - it's mostly because they are irreplaceable.

NO ONE is irreplaceable. You're gone when your number[s] come 'up'...regardless of talent. THAT is not how our societies were built. THAT is not how our economy worked...BACK when it was actually working properly...and within, or reasonably close to, budget.
This day and age is all about how much you can stuff into your fucking casket. Like King Tut these assholes think that they can take it with them. [and they'll live like fuckin' PIGS until that day arrives. EVERYONE below them is ripe for the picking.]
No wonder we have such gigantic national debts. It's buy now pay later/never in every way shape and form and our grandchildren can subsequently pay for a completely collapsed infrastucture which used to exist and which was affordable enough to fix back when it was OUR responsibility. [like over these past 25 years] But NO!!! "Oh!!! And you're fired too...'cause *my* bonus depends on it. Here come security to escort you out. B'Bye."
"Now who can I get for 1/2 that price? Oh and you... ...Yes you"..."Who Me?" "Yes You...Screw the audience. They're too stupid to notice."

At what point, exactly, do people on this board get tired of all the vitriolic negativity they seem to perpetually live in based on their endless hate of today's society? They live blindly believing corporations are evil and employers owe them something beyond the next cheque? Are people that post here really this negative in real life or is it for the benefit of seeing their vitriol spew at nauseum post after post?

Let's also remember one other thing that's unique in the industry about her tenure there. When she started, CHUM-FM was an album rock station and during the mid-80's began evolving to the pop station they have been for the last couple decades. Granted, a couple of her then-colleagues also survived the transition but it's a statement on how true talent can adapt. How many on air types today survive format changes? Like many of her ilk, she will keep busy with voiceover and related work. Former jocks such as Gord James, Jeff O'Neill, Dan Williamson and many more continued to do very well for themselves post-jock-gig.

If you see your shadow this morning will it signify six more weeks of this?

Broadcast Dialogue has published a more extensive list of Bell firings.
In its biggest round of layoffs since 2015, Bell Media has cut positions cross-country at its TV and radio stations. In a statement to Broadcast Dialogue, the company cites challenges it says Bell Media and other Canadian media companies are facing due to increasing international competition, the evolution of broadcast technologies, and advertising and regulatory pressure. Casualties include W5 investigate reporter Victor Malarek; CTV Vancouver anchor Coleen Christie; CHUM-FM Toronto midday host Ingrid Schumacher; CHOM Montreal morning co-host Heather Backman; CTV Okanagan reporter Kent Molgat; TSN Vancouver Whitecaps play by play voice Peter Schaad and BC Lions caller Scott Rintoul; CFAX 1070 AM Victoria morning co-host Steve Duffy; David Fisher, VP/GM for Bell’s Saskatchewan TV and radio stations; Don Mumford, VP/GM for Bell’s Southwestern Ontario stations; Gord Leighton, GM/GSM for Sun FM Vernon, EZ Rock in Salmon Arm, Revelstoke and Golden; Mark Burley, group program director for Bell Media’s 22 radio stations in the BC interior and his wife Janet Burley, GM for Astral Radio stations Sun FM 97.1, EZ Rock AM800 in Penticton, 98.5 EZ Rock Summerland and 102.9 EZ Rock Osoyoos.

Blah blah blah blah blah. [Blah]
I will never sit back and allow this kind of crapish behavior and mistreatment of loyal employees to be seen as anywhere even close to being acceptable, normal or proper. Why? Because IT isn't. It's theft. Theft of talent and the positive results and profits accrued from the ongoing use of that individual's unique and dependable contributions. It's dishonest. Dishonest because it doesn't share in the long term benefits and goodwill provided for the company substantially through the efforts of that [former] employee. It's narrow and small. Narrow and small because it demonstrates a colossal disregard for any kind of plan beyond the here and now and because it's beneath the level of credibility and stature that anyone should expect of ANY company with any kind of a thought toward a strong foundation and a potentially successful future.
It pisses me off every time it happens and it demands to be seen and met with every drop of vitriol we can muster. It begs a negative response which matches, at the very least, the negativity involved in removing your front line 'players' and replacing them with nothing more than a possibility. Damn the torpedoes and the audience. That they demonstrate NO love for those who stood them in such good stead for so long HAS to be faced with a hatred in kind as the nausea THEY create for so many great years of delivering the 'goods' is evil to its very core.
You think that THAT is business do you little fella? It is. But it's BAD business. Moral bankruptcy really. That ain't the path to choose...or follow. And I don't and won't.
