LA station features reporters from the competition

Back story: Charter Spectrum and Disney are in an ongoing carriage dispute, causing Disney-owned properties such as ABC, EPSN, etc off of Spectrum cable lineups.

In Los Angeles, this has resulted in KABC-TV (ABC Los Angeles) becoming unavailable for cable customers there. So yesterday, KTLA featured a “KABC Reporter of the Day” on their morning show because “we miss them on Spectrum”.

Some of you will probably be puzzled as to why a station is showing off their competitors. I think it’s a nice gag, and it shows that they feel secure about their own success that they don’t believe people will switch instantly when they mention the competition on their own air.

Re: LA station features reporters from the competition

The irony of this is that KTLA itself is blacked out on competitor DirecTV, as part of a huge fees dispute between the satcaster and station owner Nexstar. Channel 5 in L.A. disappeared from subscribers' screens months ago, along with dozens and dozens of other network-affiliated Nexstar TV stations across the U.S., with no end in sight.

(Nexstar is using the coming NFL season as leverage, and from what I've read, the viewers paying the freight are fed up with both of the parties involved, with neither one showing any interest in budging even an inch.)

This also affects dish owners in Buffalo - Nexstar owns channels 4 (CBS) and 23 (The CW) and with the former carrying some of the Bills' opening games, subscribers there are very unhappy.

Maybe KABC should return the favour and show some of KTLA's people for the beleaguered DirecTV customers.
