Meet The Now 70-Yr.-Old Teens Who Started The Probe Into "Louie Louie"

"Louie Louie" by The Kingsmen has gone down in rock history as either the most obscene single ever played on the radio or the biggest victim of bad information. We now know the latter is true, but back in 1964, it was famously the subject of an investigation by the government and the FBI over its supposed "dirty lyrics."

But did you ever wonder how it came to the attention of authorities? Turns out it was two still unnamed goody two-shoes teens from Indiana, who were convinced there was something nefarious in the unintelligible lyrics and wrote the governor of the state, who started a probe into the 45. And it escalated from there, eventually getting the FBI involved.

Years later, the Indianapolis Star used the governor's preserved letters to track down the former teens, now in their 70s and with no wish to really talk about their moment in rock infamy. At the time, it got so bad for the duo that they feared being attacked and had to hide in the principal's office when word got out and the press came calling.

The guy wound up as a lawyer. The girl taught school. Neither are happy about their place in music history.

"Look, I was in high school," the man said. "I was a small town high school kid. I did a lot of kooky things in high school. It wasn't that big a deal to me. I never became a part of the story back then, and the story never became a part of me.

"Why not ask me about something important? Like climate change. I'll talk about that. I'm passionate about it, I've got a granddaughter. The science on climate change has been clear for years. Unfortunately it's become political."

To this day, he's never told his family about the tumult he started that day.

The then-girl has let her kids in on the story, and they thought it was hilarious. But she's sorry about the whole thing.

"We shouldn't have sent that letter out (to the governor)," she said. "It wasn't a bad song, it wasn't dirty. We didn't have all the information. This was an immature mind. We didn't think."

While I was aware of the investigation into the song, I never really knew what - or in this case, who - inspired it. Now we finally do.

What a great story!

That time Indiana teens ratted out dirty ‘Louie Louie’ lyrics, and the FBI got involved

I don't know why all the fuss.
The lyrics back then should have readily available.
Just ask the damn Kingsmen.
Why did it take the FBI to investigate.
By the way the one thing about the lyrics the way they are written here is -- in 2023 doesn't the really bad so called "Jamaican" grammar seem a bit racist now?

LYRICS:Louie, Louie, oh, oh, me gotta go
Louie, Louie, me gotta goFine little girl she waits for me
Me catch the ship for cross the sea
Me sail the ship all alone
Me never think me make it homeLouie, Louie, oh, me gotta go
Louie, Louie, me gotta goThree nights and days me sail the sea
Me think of girl constantly
On the ship I dream she there
I smell the rose in her hairLouie, Louie, me gotta go
Louie, Louie, me gotta goMe see Jamaica moon above
It won't be long, me see my love
Me take her in my arms and then
I tell her I never leave againLouie, Louie, oh, me gotta go
Louie, Louie, me gotta go
I say, me gotta go
I say, me gotta go
