The World's First HD TV Broadcasts - In 1949!

This is a bit technically complicated, but I think most of us will be able to get what the article is saying. It tells the incredible story of how one country - France - actually had HDTV as long ago as the late 1940's! What happened to it and why didn't anyone else adopt it? The story is one I've never heard before.

I saw the French 819 line system at the French Pavilion at Expo 67 in Montreal. I noticed how much sharper the picture was compared to the North American NTSC system.
When I went to Germany with the USAF they had at the base a TV that could receive NTSC (for the AFRTS broadcasts), PAL and SECAM. The German PAL broadcasts were sharper than NTSC (Never The Same Colour).
