They are the pet peeve of many here, as they watch a game or coverage of an event on Sportsnet or TSN - those online gambling ads that seem to air multiple times in every single spot break.
Turns out, a provincial government agency doesn't much like them either. So the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario is banning any of the ads that contain well known athletes or sports figures shilling for the sites. Ostensibly, the reason for the restriction is to help protect children. But I suspect it will also do a lot for those adults who can't stand seeing them every five minutes. (During a Leafs-Panthers playoff game, there were 8 1/2 minutes of them shown during the match.)
The ban will affect some high profile sports personalities, including Wayne Gretzky and the newly re-signed Leaf star Auston Matthews. It goes into effect early next year.
"As of Feb. 28, no athletes—both active or retired—may be used in advertising and marketing for Internet Gaming in Ontario, with the exception of advocating for responsible gambling practices.
The same rules apply to the use of celebrities, role models, social media influencers, entertainers, cartoon figures and symbols who would “likely be expected to appeal to minors,” the ACGO said."
It doesn't mean the sites can't advertise. But they will be forced to operate under different parameters and it might wind up cutting down on them or making them less irritating in the long run.

Don't think the networks will give up the lucrative gambling ad revenue without a fight. Gambling ads will simply evolve into a new form or, more likely, simply up their presence online where the AGCO has no jurisdiction.

Yes, that's very likely. But maybe they'll turn down the irritation factor.
As for the athletes losing their gig, I can't feel sorry for them. I'm pretty sure Mr. Gretzky and Mr. Matthews are set for life and won't feel the loss.
