The idea is for the government to try to reach the public with the latest information on the missing and the recovery following the devastating fires on Maui. And while your average radio station takes months to get launched, these can be deployed from a small box (below), with a portable antenna in about 10 minutes.
The emergency stations will use the so-called "X Band" on 1620, 1650, 1670 or 1700 kHz and can reach as far as 75 miles. Another reason to keep AM. But it remains to be seen if the people they're aiming this at still own a radio to hear the updates.

I think you can get them here, but whether you'd ever be allowed to use it is another question!

I'll say! As much as I believe AM radio is a lost cause, that doesn't mean I don't have an affection for it. I'd love to have my own AM signal, especially to play on old radios.

If you keep it below a certain output. I think you can encompass the neighbourhood (about 1 km square). If anyone knows better, they can correct me.
There was also the Talking House transmitter that was available for realty use, some years ago. Apparently, it's quite thin sounding. The preassembled C-Quam transmitter that Fitz has from down under would likely fit the bill.

10 watts; 75 miles??
CBC advises a range of 11 kms for their 40w AM LPRTs
Edit: the copy should read 75 square miles. Still that is a radius of 60 kms
