New Gadget Designed To Keep Your WiFi Going During A Blackout

This comes just one day after the 20th anniversary of the not-so-great Blackout Of 2003.

I don't even know if this is available here or how much it costs, but I think I want one!

And there is your "AM Is Needed During a Crisis" problem solved.  There's always a way ... er, at least in the house.

Until the four hour battery charge runs out. Ask the people in Maui!

That said, I still want one, anyway!

However, such a crisis example (where I hear radio shined apparently) still won't save a medium.  Expense of towers and land for AM transmitters, plus the decline in revenue and listenership, doesn't spell a sustainable business model for providing a sense of protection in a crisis.  Moreover, younger people wouldn't even think of turning to a radio in a crisis, but if you can give them a way to keep their device afloat, they'll love you forever.

Storm-Ready WiFi "will keep the WiFi signal operating in the house even when there is no power".

If there is no power, I guess your "Smart TV" and desktop computer are down as well?

Otherwise, for most people, just use the "Hotspot" function on your cell phone to WiFi connect your tablet or laptop, and you are good to go at no additional cost.

Of course "Storm-Ready" will only work if the cell towers haven't been taken out by the storm.

It would work for me. I have DSL, and the phone line wouldn't go down during an outage. I just need juice to power the modem. Also, my laptop is battery powered and can last up to 7 or 8 hours on a full charge if needed, so hopefully by then, the hydro would be back. Can't speak for everyone else.
