Competition Bureau Asked To Investigate Meta Blocking News in Canada

Various media organizations have banded together to ask the Competition Bureau to investigate Meta blocking Canadians from seeing news on their digital platform.  Media groups claim this is uncompetitive and Meta is abusing it's dominate position in advertising and social media.  More from CBC.ca..https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/competition-bureau-online-news-act-meta-1.6930081

Re: Competition Bureau Asked To Investigate Meta Blocking News in Canada

I found the article linked below very interesting, perhaps more so for one reason - it argues that the feds made a huge mistake in the way they went about forming this Bill, despite knowing what the likely consequences would be.

The reason I note the unusual tone of the story is that you generally hear people who lean right criticizng the law. But in this case, the website it's on openly represents the left side of the political spectrum - and at least one of its writers thinks the way this was done went way overboard and that the reaction should have been anticipated.

Worth a read if you'd like a different point of view on this, from a perspective you might not expect.

Canada’s newspaper chains badly overplayed their hand in attempted tech shakedown

I look forward to your election to political office, Uncle, so we can all finally learn how everything should be done.

This keeps getting dumber and dumber.

I don't think anyone should be comfortable with the government telling social media sites what types of content they should or shouldn't allow users to link to.

That's exactly what that snivelling Liberal commie piece of horse crap is. He and his party immediately lost my vote when he rammed C-11 through Parliament.

Re: Competition Bureau Asked To Investigate Meta Blocking News in Canada

Back to the original point of this thread. I rarely visit Facebook, but I had occasion to look at a page this morning and got the dreaded "This content isn't available in Canada" on one of the posts.

What surprised me is that I was using a double VPN set to the U.S. when I accessed the page, thinking it would identify me as not being in Canada. This always works for restricted videos and other content but it didn't in this case.

My question: how did they know?

Does your profile list your location?

Nope. I never used my real name or location with anything to do with Meta. I'm not a poster on their site, just a lurker and have never made a single Facebook post, nor do I have any desire to do so.

But working in a newsroom, it's helpful to have access in case something comes up there from a person in the headlines and you need to read it. Mostly, though I just ignore it.

Interesting. I'd be curious to know, too.

Yeah, just turned on my VPN on a laptop with no GPS or LTE and Google Maps still knows my location. I think it uses an aggregate of nearby wifi connections? There's a poster or two here who knows for sure and I'm super curious.

But you're cool with one billionaire blocking an entire country's media from the world's largest town square.  Neat.
