Remembering the golden era of music magazines

Alan Cross looks back at a time when magazine stands were filled with publications featuring news about the latest hit groups. And he explains why he laments giving them away.

"They became a fire hazard and a potential city for rodents, so I pawned them all off on a guy who ran a used record store. I see now that was a mistake because many issues are now coveted by collectors. That includes my old “Rock is Sick” edition of Rolling Stone. I just saw it up for auction with an asking price of US$770."

Remembering the golden era of music magazines

Cross talks about classics like Rolling Stone, The New Music Express and Creem. But he fails to mention the freebie "Go Magazine," which was given away by radio stations across North America, including 1050 CHUM.

Then there were the other kinds of music magazines - the ones that printed the lyrics to all your favourite songs. I have no idea why I bought some of these, but I did.

I was a Melody Maker reader, remember that one?

I do remember the name, although it wasn't one of the mags I bought. But there are pics of it all over the net. Amazing all the years it covered.

Re: Remembering the golden era of music magazines

I was raised on the radio and Rock mags. Collected them from about 1967 to the early 2000's. Have almost every issue still and it's a daunting task to go through them and scan relevant issues. Suffice to say I have thousands with perhaps hundreds of different names from the US, UK and Canada. Even some "fanzines." When I say fanzines I don't mean things like 16 and Flip but rather niche small fan generated publications with low circulation.

Hit Parader was perhaps the first to publish serious articles beyond 16 magazine teen angle.Dr Demento under his real name wrote for them. The first truly serious rock magazine aligned to the emerging counter culture was the Paul Williams edited Crawdaddy ! in 1966. This existed in some form right up to the 80;s. I have a numberof issue of Melody Maker and the New Musical Express from the UK from the 70's. Also many editions of the most excellent Rocord Collector and Mojo which were also from the UK and perhaps in their prime in the 1990's and 2000's.

Have posted pics on the board a few times and this was the most recent:

Re: Remembering the golden era of music magazines

Could not resist a brief foray into my magazine collection but not too deep. More recent vintage. Mojo and Record Collector both from the UK. Record Collectors' American equivalents DISCoveries and Goldmine. One day I may brave going a bit deeper in for those 70's issues of Melody Maker and The New Musical Express. Oh yes and as I mentioned above Dr Demento wrote for Hit Parader under his real name which is Barett Hansen and I may also look for some of his articles at some point.

Re: Remembering the golden era of music magazines

Just read the Alan Cross article. I have tried to be careful about the fire hazard concern he mentions and thankfully mice have not been a problem. I have the Sex Pistol's issue that he speaks of and was listed for over $ 700 on eBay. I don't think the person will get that.

I believe  these older issues of the mag should be worth something especially considering the cover subjects. Most of my Rolling Stones are fairly accessible and so I did not have the fear and loathing that I usually have about trying to access the magazine collection. Included one issue of Crawdaddy as it was misfiled with the RS's.

A small selction of older issues:
