Matthew Halton of the CBC - WW2 coverage

The lazy days of summer have given me some time to rediscover archive.org and its excellent collection of Old Time Radio material, including news broadcasts from the Golden Age. In addition to the American and British coverage of World War Two, the work of the CBC's two war correspondents, Matthew Halton (father of David) and Marcel Quimet, is also featured.

Here's Halton's classic piece on going ashore with the Canadian troops in France on D-Day. Unlike the American reporting of the invasion, Halton didn't sugarcoat the danger the soldiers faced as they waded ashore under heavy fire. Despite the restrictions of censorship, he delivered a masterclass in audio storytelling.
