Next February, the Super Bowl will be child's play. No matter who's on the field.
CBS, which owns the rights to the game in 2024, is partnering with U.S. cable station Nickelodeon to do a separate version of the broadcast just for kids. I've never heard of this before, but apparently, they've tried it on a few games, including one last Christmas.
The idea is to introduce a younger crowd to the sport in a way they hope will keep children tuned in and become lifelong fans. That's why some of the commentators on the championship will be characters from SpongeBob SquarePants, if you can imagine such a thing.
(Actually, you don't have to imagine it - here's a sample of the real thing from Dec. 25, 2022.)
"The Nickelodeon presentations — which feature eye-popping graphics that feature slime-filled end zones or SpongeBob SquarePants between the goalposts on field-goal attempts — have also received plenty of acclaim for its ability to introduce a younger age group to the basics of the game but also focused on the action happening on the field to keep parents interested."
The AP article below indicates the coverage will be available in the U.K., Australia and New Zealand, but there's no word if this version will be seen in Canada.
