One Of The Strangest Shows On Television Comes To Canada

I'm not sure how many people have ever heard of this. It's called "The Goes Wrong Show," and its title tells you all you really need to know. It's a bizarre British series and I'm not entirely sure if I think it's hilarious or a complete waste of time. Maybe somewhere between the two.

It originally aired in England from 2019-2021 and has just made it over here. So what's the idea? It concerns a fictional British troupe of actors that tries to put on a play every week. But as the name implies, something (well, more than just something - more like everything) always goes wrong during the staging of the show, leading to absolute chaos on screen. Actors flub their lines, come in too early, props don't work or break in the middle of the performance, the sets collapse, petty in-fighting breaks out on stage etc. etc.

In one episode I saw on Channel 17, the builders got the dimensons of the sets wrong and the "actors" had to essentially turn the camera over while they did the entire thing upside down, leading to things like a cup of tea looking like it was spiralling towards the ceiling, defying gravity.

Speaking of which, it's not everyone's cup of tea. It's even odd in the final credits, where the actors playing the "actors" get billed on screen along with the "roles" they're portraying in the show. So it will say something like "Henry Shields as Chris Bean as Captain Horatio Portnoy."

According to the listings, CHCH has now picked up the series, and is running it every Friday night at 8 PM. It's a very strange show, but in terms of things Going Wrong, they certainly do it right.

If this splasticky kind of farce sounds like something you might like or you're just curious, you can set your DVR to record it this week or you can watch it now (where else?) on YouTube.

"Goes Wrong" has had airings on WNED 17 the past 1 or 2 years on Saturday evenings.  It has often been paired with "Upstart Crow" which takes a humorous look at the writing and home life of Bill "William"  Shakespeare.

I only caught up to it a few weeks ago and then it seemed to have disappeared from WNED. I'm still not quite sure what to make of it. Is it funny or just dumb - or perhaps, both?
