The CW Picks Up Another Cdn. Show - But Will It Translate To The U.S.?

The show is CBC's Son Of a Critch, which takes place and deals with life in Newfoundland in the 80s. It's one of CBC's better shows and does well in the ratings here. But Canadians are used to the idiosyncrasies to the language and traditions of Newfoundland. Will it translate to Americans, who may be more unfamiliar with the expressions and lifestyles depicted in the sitcom?

Viewers there will decide when it debuts on the network this summer. It won't hurt that a familiar name, Malcolm McDowell, is part of the cast.

It's the second Canadian series going to the fifth-place network. Just last week, the CW picked up CTV's "Sullivan's Crossing" but that one will run in the fall. And if the writers' strike isn't over by then, it may well be one of the few new shows on the air south of the border.

Um...hey? Only a Summer run? Will they expand into the fall (especially since there is a writer's strike)
Will former CW's (in the fall) still pick up the show?
It makes sense due to the writer's strike, or does CW simply say nope! Sorry, but you left us!

I would think once they disaffiliate from the network, they have no access to any of the programming. I can't see it happening any other way.

Son of a Critch: The CW Acquires Hit Canadian Comedy for Summer Run

Creator Mark Critch is asked by a U.S. interviewer if he believes the show will translate to an American audience, in an extensive 20 minute interview. You can watch the video or read the transcript here

"...with Newfoundland it’s different, is odd, it’s unique. But, you know, if you’re from Boston or someplace, you’re looking at that. There’s a lot of similarities, and I think there’s lots of people in America will be able to see their own kind of working-class family in it."

Re: The CW Picks Up Another Cdn. Show - But Will It Translate To The U.S.?

Son Of a Critch got off to a strong start on the CW on Monday.  The network played back to back episodes, #1 and #2 from season one.  The premiere at 8pm had 470,000 viewers and at 8:30 420,000.  For CW these are good numbers.  Up until Monday over the past week the highest rated show on CW was The Chosen One which had 450,000 people tuning in.

Children Ruin Everything also had it's debut on Monday evening again with two back to back shows.  9pm had 290,000 and following at 9:30, 280,000 viewers. These are average numbers for CW but both episodes did register with the all important 18-49 demo with a 1 share.  Son Of a Critch also had a 1 share for the 8pm offering.

Both of these Canadian imports also have back to back shows scheduled for tomorrow.  On Friday it's Global's Family Law which had 400,000 viewers last week and CBC's Moonshine that clocked in with 300,000 and both with a 1 share 18-49.

Even though the cancon imports likely won't be huge hits for CW, they initially seem to be helping the struggling network.  CW is the only OTA network in the US that has any amount of new scripted programming right now, and will throughout the rest of the summer.

Looks like the doubleheaders for Son of A Critch and Children Ruin Everything tonight are repeats from Monday on CW.

Family Law and Moonshine are both new programs for Friday evening.

Mark's 2018 autobiography "Son of a Critch, a Childish Newfoundland Memoir" is highly recommended for those who enjoy reading autobiographies
