A number of years ago I met with Ray, a gentleman (since deceased) who then was an investor in broadcasting, at a popular Waterloo burger restaurant (since closed). We chatted about the hole that "oldies" format radio had dug for itself and its practice of blaming the CRTC for its inevitable collapse (Oldies radio died shortly thereafter)
As we chatted, a man with a little girl walked up to the juke box and examined the playlist. The child asked the man for a coin, inserted it, and made her selection. She chose "Sugar, Sugar". "Andy Kim should be appointed to the Order of Canada" remarked Ray (as we paid for our lunch and got the hell out)
This morning's Globe 'n Mail and NatPost both list Andy Kim as an Order of Canada appointee.
Oh! Canada,

Who remembers this version of "O Canada" from television station sign-offs? Montreal '76 rendition by Vic Vogel... we play this version at the local Junior A hockey games.

And if you go to a Kitchener Rangers game, about the only 60's songs they regularly play during a game are
Sugar, Sugar and Sweet Caroline. Both released in 1969.
Enjoy Canada Day, and the long weekend everyone!!

And here is the CHUM Chart July 1st 1972. Notice how the music goes from heavier songs like Layla and Troglodyte to more CFRB sounding tunes like The Candy Man, Daddy Don't You Walk So Fast, Amazing Grace..

It has been stated right here in this SOWNY forum, a # of years ago (when radio enthusiasts foolishly believed that their posts could be influential) that CHUM's downfall began in '68 with Yummy Yummy Yummy by Ohio Express being a factor

Thank you for the opening. Enjoy...
July 1 has historically been a slow day on SOWNY, so thank you to those who participated. Let's pick the topic up again July 1, 2024
