The veteran host has been at the helm of the weekly NBC public affairs show for a decade. That ends in September, when he officially steps down and leaves the show in the hands of Kristen Welker. He made the announcement at the tail end of this week's program.
"I'd rather leave a little bit too soon than stay a tad bit too long....I've let work consume me for nearly 30 years. I can't remember the last time I didn't wake up before 5 or 6 AM. And as I've watched too many friends and family let work consume them before it was too late, I promised my family I wouldn't do that."
Meet The Press is the longest running show in TV history, having first aired way back in 1947. It has not been off the air since.

The guy is 51? This is not voluntary.

Well, I'm 53, and I just voluntarily left radio in April. Sure, it was just traffic reporting, but when you have an on-air forum of any sort, you second-guess yourself about leaving the microphone behind.
But guess what ... BEST damn thing I ever did. I was sick of weekends, and then after moving to early mornings in September, I was fatigued of that too. I loved the team I was opposite of in Brantford ... a LOT (John Biggs and Lisa D make a fun and stellar team), but that constituted a minute portion of my duties and it came late in my tenure over the last decade.
There are some "retirements" that sure appear like shoulder taps, but I can say that some departures are indeed voluntarily. More and more, radio and television people are learning that there is indeed life outside of this dying business. I respect those who stand by it, and persevere, but I'm sure glad to get out.

I used to do this old joke:
What's the difference between radio and unemployment?
Unemployment pays more and the hours are better!
Your voice will be missed on air, but you've always got a place here. (Unfortunately, we don't pay anything either!)
