Past Or Present: Who Said This About Cdn. Radio & When?

Here's a quote from a government official. It's not likely you'll know who said it but you might be able to guess when it was said:

“I have watched — naturally I felt it my duty to watch — the program and the material that was coming over the air, and much of it is of the most objectionable character … what I object to most strongly is the character of the ribald songs and vulgar dialogues regarding robberies, burglaries, hold-ups of banks and things like that.”

A critique about the state of radio & TV today? Well, not exactly. It was apparently said by one John Aird of the Aird Commission, designated to look into the state of radio broadcasting - back in 1932! The more things change...

One thing the Aird Commission got wrong, though, is an expressed desire to have all radio (there was no TV back then) controlled by the government and that private broadcasting should never be allowed.

"It argued the new medium of radio should be regarded as a national public service rather than a profit-making industry, and its ownership and operating structure should be organized to recognize this principle."

To Aird is human, I guess, but I'm grateful he didn't get his way on that one.

All this is from an article that posits turning more toward the European model of broadcasting (minus the licence fees!) would be a better choice for the future of Canadian stations than what's done in the U.S.

It's a bit egghead-y but an interesting read.

Canada should look to its past and Europe for guidance on media policy — but not south
