Re: Rogers to redirect funding from Global to CityNews

Tough times for Corus and Global...

One wonders if Global will even make it to 50 years?

One must wonder how this will affect CHEX and CKWS. Stop the 11 PM news, the morning shows? Then Global National.

If CityNews restores CityNews International, that will be the nail in the coffin for Global National.
(like a double whammy. Strip funding, then compete head on, stealing ad revenue...)

Didn't the CRTC make them promise not to do this exact thing?

As it is now I’m very surprised CHEX and CKWS are doing morning shows. CTV stations in larger markets such as London, Kitchener and Montreal aren’t doing morning shows; when CTV cut the show in London in 2009 they specifically said they couldn’t afford it.

Global does have one advantage over Citytv - higher national coverage. Citytv has caught up quite a bit in recent years, but there are still some holes, notably Atlantic Canada.

Re: Rogers to redirect funding from Global to CityNews

I wonder if Rogers is thinking of opening an Ottawa television station.  Presently we get CITY - TV from a transmitter of the Toronto channel.

No.

Nobody is opening a conventional TV station anywhere, especially Ottawa.

Global does have one advantage over Citytv - higher national coverage. Citytv has caught up quite a bit in recent years, but there are still some holes, notably Atlantic Canada.

I could see some of the following happening if Global were to not get access to that fund:

- The separate New Brunswick weekday 6 & 11 News would go away and be replaced by Maritime-wide newscasts
- The Montreal and Maritimes evening newscasts would be presented from Toronto 7 days a week
- CHEX & CKWS could lose their morning and noon shows (CHEX has already cancelled theirs)
- Regina and Saskatoon could merge into a single Saskatchewan news operation; separate morning and evening shows for both cities would go away. The 5 PM provincial newscast could also go away.
- News production for the Alberta stations could be centralized to either Calgary or Edmonton; there will still be separate newscasts for the 3 cities, but it could all come from the one super hub in that province.
- BC1 could shut down.

I don’t foresee Global National shutting down but that production could certainly get hit.

So, less money for their overall news operations (could they cancel their noon show locally?) and now having to fight a high profile libel legal fight, too. Would not want to be in the upper offices over there for the foreseeable future - not to mention a newsroom employee.

Re: Rogers to redirect funding from Global to CityNews

Corus says it is undergoing an “enterprise-wide cost review extending to all business units” which it states are already in a difficult financial situation.

One of the first departments identified in the internal cost review has already fallen victim to the loss of the "local expression funding" from Rogers...

Global has laid off the majority of the News Publicity/Promotions Department which served both the local market newscasts and Global National. The line budget for news promotions was heavily skewed to the western market stations and Global National. The western stations will retain on average one news promotion writer/producer, while the smaller eastern markets and Global Toronto have experienced the majority of the layoffs.

ET Canada is not affected by this layoff round.

Corus is scheduled to release Q3 financial results on June 29th.
