Second Longest Running Radio Show Turns A Remarkable 81 Years Old

Given the state of radio today, it's hard to imagine anything running ten years, let alone 81! But that's the milestone the BBC show called "Desert Island Discs" is marking, having been on the air in Britain since 1942.

In case you've never heard of it, the show asks a famous guest to list the eight favourite records, a book and one other item they'd want with them if they were stranded on a desert island. And that simple premise has somehow lasted on the air for more than eight decades!

Here's a look at the second oldest radio show in the medium's history:

And by the way, you may be wondering: if this show is the second longest in radio history, what's the first? It's hard to imagine, but once you hear the answer, it's obvious: The Grand Ole Opry has been a country staple on WSM Nashville since 1925. That's an incredible 98 years - and counting.
