Sportsnet Announcers Making Headlines Across North America

It's usually the results of a ball game that makes headlines, not the announcers calling it. But on Monday's Jays-Yankees broadcast on Sportsnet, it was something the crew in the booth noticed and pointed out that is getting all the attention.

Buck Martinez and Dan Shulman both took note that Yankees slugger Aaron Judge seemed to be looking at something intensely during an at-bat - a moment that was immediately followed by a mammoth home run. The allegation appears to be that he was cheating somehow, perhaps stealing a sign. The fact that he hit the next pitch out of the park only increased the suspicions.

Now that dialogue between the two has attracted a lot of notice south of the border, with the story spreading on sports sites across America. The fact it's the Yankees and superstar Aaron Judge is only giving the fire more oxygen.

"During the Blue Jays’ TV broadcast, the cameras showed Judge making a side-eye glance toward his dugout. Sportsnet broadcasters Dan Shulman and Buck Martinez said he did it “more than once” and wondered aloud what he was looking at.

“What is that?” said Shulman.

 “Where’s he looking?” said Martinez.

“You don’t wanna go throwing allegations around without knowing but…”

That bit of dialogue and what happened next is getting noticed everywhere. The New York papers are understandably having a field day with it. It's been on CBS Sports and ESPN nationally. It's even appeared in an Irish newspaper.

For his part, Judge claims he was trying to admonish his own dugout for chirping at the umpire for ejecting the team's manager over a call dispute. But it's clear Shulman and Martinez don't entirely buy that explanation. A rare moment when the broadcast staff became as much a part of the game as the game itself.

It was probably the most exciting part of the whole night, as the Jays were blown out 7-4.

Most are defending Judge, pointing out there's no reason to steal signs (which is not illegal in any case) when the Yankees were up 6-0.

Nobody accused Aaron Judge of anything on last night's broadcast including Buck and Dan.  They were wondering what he was looking at.  And he stared to his right a few times before some pitches which is something they had never seen him do before.  When the camera was zoomed tight on him, it did seem a bit strange, since his attention wasn't only on the pitcher.  Judge's explanation when interviewed after the game was logical.

If you're lucky enough to have AppleTV, you'll see the first Blue Jay game against the Orioles on Friday. As noted, it won't be on Sportsnet TV, although the radio broadcast will go as usual.

There's also a new wrinkle for those equipped to try it out.

I think this will be the second Apple TV game for the Jays this season?

Yes, there was a Yankee contest early in the season that aired there on Friday night. It's the last one on Apple featuring the Jays this year.
