The CBC Deflects Complaints About Too Many Betting Ads During Playoffs

When it comes to viewers complaining endlessly about the number of gambling ads airing on this year's Stanley Cup playoffs, all bets are off. At least as far as the CBC is concerned.

The national network admits it's been inundated with criticism about all the wagering spots and reminders that seem to air non-stop on its hockey broadcasts, but insists it's not to blame. Instead, the Corp. blames Rogers Sportsnet, which has the rights to the NHL in Canada and allows CBC to show the games as part of an agreement.

But it also means the network isn't in control of what is being advertised, something it's constantly trying to explain to irate viewers, who think the commercials have no place on Canada's public broadcaster.

CBC says it has no control of gambling ads during hockey broadcasts

Re: The CBC Deflects Complaints About Too Many Betting Ads During Playoffs

The concern about CBC not being able to make advertising or editorial decisions for HNIC have been around since the Rogers deal was first announced in 2014. I recall CBC brought this up during the Don Cherry “you people” controversy in late 2019, as many viewers had complained to the CBC either about Cherry’s comments, or about his dismissal.

Re: The CBC Deflects Complaints About Too Many Betting Ads During Playoffs

Is the CBC/Rogers deal against the rules as it really is giving Rogers a 2nd English broadcast station during hockey games since they control content and revenue from commercials ?

No, Rogers has a network license, approved by the CRTC, that allows them to control editorial and commercial content on Rogers Hockey broadcasts on CBC TV.

Rogers doesn't have adequate national OTA coverage

The article said "in-kind" contributions such as "production staff, studio space and other resources" for the first 5 years. This is why the broadcasts were still based out of the CBC studios for the first few years until everything was moved to Rogers' studios. CBC also probably provided some engineers and staff that remained from the cull of the CBC Sports division

Whats the point of CBC carrying the broadcast ?

The network license application (https://crtc.gc.ca/eng/archive/2015/2015-154.htm) states that CBC benefits by:
- Continuing to have hockey has a HUGE promotional vehicle to promote other CBC programs and services
- Provide programming that CBC would otherwise have to replace with either original or purchased programming

Re: The CBC Deflects Complaints About Too Many Betting Ads During Playoffs

The gambling ads are legal for broadcast, so yes CBC should carry them on HNIC.  Some people still don't like the idea of CBC producing and airing Family Feud Canada because it is too lowbrow.  In their opinion not worthy of the public broadcaster, and not the type of show they should schedule.  Get the pickle out of your bum please...

When Don Cherry was fired, many were blaming CBC for canning a "real Canadian" like Cherry.  But of course it was Rogers who "squished the grapes" and not CBC.  Don usually has good things to say about his many years working for the corpse.  Same as another popular conservative Mr. Wonderful Kevin O'Leary.  He has said that CBC's crew on Dragon's Den was superior to those working on Shark Tank on ABC.

HNIC still has a few CBC elements from the old show, but it is a Rogers production and CBC is just running the Rogers feed, commercials and all.  CBC gets in return a lot of promo on Sportsnet.  CBC gains a lot of "in kind" back when TSN and Sportsnet pick up Olympic coverage from the public broadcaster.

Not only that, but Sportsnet is not on basic cable everywhere. It’s on basic for Rogers customers, but some other cable companies have Sportsnet on a premium tier. When the Rogers deal first took effect in 2014, I lived in a Cogeco area and didn’t get Sportsnet at all, though they did have TSN on basic so I did get a few midweek hockey games in addition to the Saturday night games on CBC. Everyone gets CBC on basic cable or satellite, plus they have CBC Gem at no charge and it’s OTA in select cities.
